About Suzanne Sbarge
Suzanne Sbarge combines photography and painting in layered, experimental images that explore the endless possibilities for merging these complimentary media. In many of her images she uses pinhole photographs, which gives them an unpredictable, dream-like quality that reveals mysterious aspects of people and objects. Suzanne's work involves primarily oil painting over mixed media photo-collages. She builds her images using layers of photography, collage, and painting. Her figure-based, narrative iconography conveys a sense of myth, ritual, twisted fairy tales, and the surreal aspects of everyday life.

Suzanne has exhibited her work locally and nationally in 30 group exhibitions and five one-person shows over the last 12 years. Her work is in the collections of 30 local and national collectors. She received her Bachelors of Arts Degree from Barnard College in New York City and her Masters of Arts from the University of New Mexico. She has also studied studio arts at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Toulouse, France; Syracuse University in Florence, Italy; The Art Students' League in New York City; University of Connecticut; University of Massachusetts; as well as Anderson Ranch in Colorado and Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.

Influences include Hundertvasser, Bea Nettles, and Leonora Carrington. Her mentors include Holly Roberts and Pinkney Herbert.

"My lament for the lowly silver print slowly dissolved as I became enthralled by her conjuring agility."

Wesley Pulkka, The Albuquerque Journal

"Suzanne Sbarge might be Albuquerque's answer to Franz Kafka... She seems to create a new world - one in which she can transform the past or forge a new future."
